A cultural carnival inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas, also known as "Shanhai Jing", kicked off on Sunday (Jan 15) at the Digital Publishing Base of Huazhong Intelligent Valley in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, ahead of the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year, which falls on Jan 22, local media reported.

The Classic of Mountains and Seas is a Chinese classic text and a compilation of mythical places and beasts.

A ceremony was held at the New Times Square of the digital publishing base located in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone on Sunday evening. Liu Ziqing, a member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China Wuhan City Committee and the secretary of the working committee of the development zone, and other Wuhan official attended the ceremony.

The digital publishing base, funded, built and operated by Wuhan Culture and Tourism Group, is the first digital publishing base in Central China and the only national digital publishing base in the province.

The cultural carnival will last until May. Seventeen large light shows featuring elements of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, more than 20 thematic cultural activities and other cultural events will be held to entertain local residents during the Spring Festival.

In recent years, the cultural industries in Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone have flourished, with a great many cultural centers, libraries, museums and fitness centers built, improving the efficiency of cultural services and enriching the cultural life of Wuhan residents.

The development zone take advantage of the carnival to promote the high-quality development of its digital economy and night economy through good policies, a sound environment and good services, officials said.
