Last year, the permanent resident population in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) hit 618,000, an increase of 96,500 since the seventh national census in 2020 and ranking second in Wuhan.

WEDZ aims to double the size of its economy and permanent resident population as well as number of market entities during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).

Several factors account for the population surge in the zone, such as the shift of manufacturers from coastal regions to further inland, talent and college graduate inflows, and the establishment of major 10-billion-yuan projects and corporate headquarters in the city during the post-pandemic period.

Through the innovative development of real economy and digital economy, the zone has become home to a growing number of high-quality talents. "WEDZ features vitality and creativity, and is an ideal place for us college students willing to develop careers in Wuhan," said Dai Xun, an undergraduate from Wuhan University of Technology.

Construction will start this month on a research institute launched jointly by the university and the zone, focusing on core technologies in artificial intelligence, new energy vehicles and promoting the integration between the innovation and industrial chains. In addition, several research institutions operated by Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University committed to developing future technologies, international education, and smart medical equipment will also be established in Junshan New City.
