        "Conductor" at stamping workshop

        Updated: 2017-10-27

Equipment is the material and technical base on which an enterprise exists and develops. Whether its equipment is properly used makes a difference in any company.

To Peng Yanbin, the equipment in the workshop seems to have come to life. The coordination between electrical principles, industrial procedures and mechanical equipment is like a symphony; adjusting it just makes the melody more pleasant.

Peng is a team leader responsible for maintenance of stamping equipment at the Wuhan factory of Dongfeng Renault Automotive Company Limited. The factory is located in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone.

Born in 1977 in Central China's Hubei province, Peng has shown a great interest in cars since his childhood. He began to study at a vocational skills training school in 1994, specializing in mould fitters. Since then, moulds have been a part of his life.

As a high-ranking graduate, Peng was recommended to Dongfeng Motor Die & Mould Co. Ltd in 1997. He went on to join Dongfeng Renault in 2014, working as the leader of the stamping equipment maintenance department.

This job requires Peng to have a good command of both moulds and electrical equipment.

According to Peng, the stamping workshop equipment operates automatically, but uses a domestic punch press and imported auto equipment, which didn't fit well together from the beginning. He needs to supervise every step of the production process to ensure the equipment’s safe operation.

Every morning Peng arrives at the company 30 minutes ahead of time, preparing for the manufacturing of the day.

The first thing Peng does is look around the workshop, checking the maintenance record of the previous day and noting the safety issues.

When a malfunction is found, it's critical to keep the punch press operating. It can't be troubleshot until the production process is suspended or the production for that day has ended. Therefore, Peng often works overtime.

It is a high speed automatic production line at the stamping workshop. By paying a lot of attention to safety, Peng Yanbin has given the workshop a security culture.

He arranges a variety of activities to increase workers' safety awareness, such as a Safety Cases Classroom, Safe Operation Observation training and watching of videos on safety education, with a 100% attendance rate. He also sets the safety standards within the department.

At the stamping workshop, moulds must be highly accurate; even minimal errors are not allowed. With years of experience and professional knowledge, Peng can detect errors by just touching the mould with his hands.

Peng said that as a technician learning and practicing techniques is his primary task. Only when he has superb skills does a technician feel unafraid when facing malfunctions and problems.

In Peng's view, every maintenance drill means a chance of learning. Now, as both the automation level of the production line and the accuracy of moulds are increasing, equipment maintenance involves a test-running of the entire production line.

As the bellwether in the field of press punch maintenance, Peng often participates in skills competition at different levels and has won many first prizes. He was awarded the status of Technical Expert of Wuhan in 2008 and the Labor Day Medal of Wuhan in 2016.
